A Mother Knows Things - Health is Wealth
For Principle 2 of A Mother Knows Things series, we are focusing on health - our most valuable currency in life. This is one of those topics that people underestimate until something happens.
I am no different.
After a coming back from a vacation last year, I had a sudden drive to refresh my workout routine. I decided to incorporate deadlifts. I initially didn't feel any discomfort when I started deadlifting during one of my workouts. This gave me the confidence that I needed to really kick it up a notch with the weights. So I kept adding more weights. And adding. And adding. When I went home that night, I was still feeling good.
The other shoe dropped the next morning.
The pain started off dull. As the days passed, it quickly progressed. Eventually, standing and sitting for long periods of time became a nightmare. I decided to try managing the pain holistically, so I did acupuncture for the first time. Each session numbed the pain for a couple of days, but it always came roaring back.
Imagine being afraid to sneeze or cough! That's how bad it got for me. Either one of those things would shoot pain up my back causing me to immediately fall to the ground. It was awful. When sleeping became painful after a few weeks, I finally decided to go to a doctor. It was only after doing that and having an MRI that I truly understood the gravity of the situation.
I had a severely herniated disc in my lower back on the right side. If you ask me, -100 out of 10 do not recommend.
The doctor gave me an epidural injection in my back and, thankfully, it’s been gradually easing the pain to a more manageable level.
As my back continues to heal, this whole experience has made me appreciate my health in a deeper way and all the little everyday things my back does for me that I never really noticed before.
Have you ever gone through something with your health that deepened your sense of gratitude and appreciation for your body?
